Tom Daschle, the former South Dakota senator who has been making news for not paying has back taxes, started out by driving Pontiac cars around the nation’s capital. Recently, however, he was forced to remove his name from the top of the list of people to head the Health and Human Services Department. The reason: He had an outstanding tax bill of $140,000 that resulted from the “free use of a car and driver from a corporate benefactor.”
A commercial from one of Daschle’s earlier campaigns has made its way around the Internet in the last couple days that shows him in a Pontiac Ventura II. It was one of the more popular Pontiac cars that the automaker manufactured and sold between 1971 and 1977. That car probably wouldn’t have passed today’s emissions standards, but he could’ve traded it in for one of the newer Pontiac cars on the market and spent his time behind the wheel. One article writer even suggested that “If Daschle had hung on to that car, he might be Secretary of Health and Human Services today.”
