VW Cars and Cell Phones: A Blinding Mix

vw carsWe have all heard that talking on your handheld cell phone while driving can be a devastating combination. Most people describe the cell phone as being a distraction while behind the wheel, but that is not the only problem.

This blogger cites a study that proves that cell phones impair your peripheral vision. According to an article in Optometry: Journal of the American Optometric Association, a study showed that “the cognitive task involved in processing a conversation on a cell phone is reflected in a significantly reduced visual field area.” Simply put, talking on your cell phone takes attention away from your visual system. So when a driver pulls up alongside your car, you may not see it.

The study also showed that it does not matter what type of cell phone you are using. Your vision is detracted even if you are using a hands-free device.

It does not matter whether you are talking or texting on your cell phone when driving your VW cars. It is a dangerous combination that can result in a collision, injury or even death. With all the studies and incidents in recent years that prove this theory, why are you still ignoring it and insisting on learning the hard way?

Letter Writer Reminisces about Pontiac Cars

pontiac dealersThere was a time when Pontiac cars were the coolest, most powerful cars on the roads. They were the muscle cars that all the “bad guys” wanted when they were in high school. The letter writer – Jeff Slemp – reminisces about those days and is saddened by GM’s announcement to cease producing the Pontiac brand.

In the letter writer’s teen years, the Pontiac Trans Am was a status symbol. The movie “Smokey and the Bandit” had just come out in 1977 and kids all over the United States drooled at the power and style of the black and gold Trans Am featured in the movie.

Slemp saw his first Trans Am in person while at a restaurant in Waynesville, Missouri. It had a shine that he couldn’t believe. According to his description, it “gave the illusion of looking into a bottomless black pool.” He also recalled that every Trans Am he saw in those days was taken care of and always appeared to have a fresh wax job.

The 1970s Pontiac cars defined a generation. “They were an indisputable part of that era even though they were loud, guzzled gas and needed constant maintenance,” recalls Slemp. Today, he still looks nostalgically at pictures of the “Bandit” 1977 Pontiac Trans Am and wishes he could have one of those now.

“Meet the Volkswagens” Launches Today

volkswagenIn an effort to bring its name to the forefront of the auto industry in these trying times, Volkswagen is putting its competition in the hotseat with the new “Meet the Volkswagens” ad campaign launching today.

The new campaign includes several 30-second TV spots entitled “Meet the Volkswagens” and they feature Max the Beetle, a character from previous ads, and BUS. BUS is a new character and Thomas Haden Church (Sandman from “Spider Man 3″) provides the voice for this ruby red 1963 VW Micro Bus. The ads pull some aspects from the tradition of VW cars as well as current comparisons in order to bring attention to important features that today’s car buyer is interested in, including fuel efficiency, cost of ownership and various safety features.

“We will build our case by sharing facts about real issues that customers care about, debunking myths and doing it in a tongue-in-cheek and entertaining way that is uniquely Volkswagen,” explained Tim Ellis, the VP of Marketing for Volkswagen of America.

The “Meet the Volkswagens” campaign is scheduled to run for eight weeks. The spots are also going to direct viewers to the Facebook social networking website where potential customers can learn more about the newest VW cars and other information about the brand.

Choosing the Best Auto Mechanic for Your VW Cars

vw carsYour VW cars are important to you. That’s why finding the best mechanic for repairs and preventative maintenance is crucial. Here are five tips to help you find the ideal mechanic for your VW cars.

1. Start shopping for a mechanic before you really need one. The best way to find a good mechanic is to try different ones for small jobs. Take your VW cars for an oil change until you find a service professional that makes you feel comfortable.
2. Do not always choose the least expensive mechanic. Just because the repairs are cheaper somewhere does not mean you get the same quality and service. If the job is not done properly, it will just cost you more later.
3. Research various mechanics through the Better Business Bureau and local websites or organizations. A great way to find a reputable mechanic is to see if what other customers are saying about them.
4. Find a facility that is clean, neat and organized. This is usually a good sign that the mechanic is reputable and safe.
5. Look at their volume of business. Is their parking lot always full of customers? That is often the sign of a trusted and respected mechanic, too.

End of Pontiac Cars Is End of Pop Culture Icon

pontiac carsIf you’re a TV buff like me, you’ve seen a number of Pontiac cars on the small screen through the years. Here are a few shows and movies in which you may have seen your favorite Pontiac car.

Smokey and the Bandit – This 1977 movie starring Jackie Gleason as an incompetent sheriff and Burt Reynolds as an outlaw showcased the beauty and power of the Pontiac Trans Am. Reynolds also used a red Trans Am for his antics in the movie “Hooper.”

The Rockford Files – Jim Garner, aka Jim Rockford, used a Pontiac Firebird in this old show to solve crimes.

Knight Rider – If Pontiac could create another car like the original KITT in the 1980s series “Knight Rider,” General Motors may keep it as one of its brands. But David Hasselhoff’s character drove the only talking Pontiac when fighting crimes on this show that enjoys a cult following.

Pontiac cars have also made appearances in other entertainment mediums. The song “GTO” had the nation singing along with the radio whether they were driving a Pontiac brand car or not. The Monkees also drove around in a GTO during their heyday.

The end of production for Pontiac cars may be just around the corner, but they will always have a special place in the heart of pop culture enthusiasts and in movies and TV shows that we all enjoy.
