Hyundai Cars to Get 35 MPG by 2015

The Hyundai Motor Company announced plans last week that its fleet of Hyundai cars will average about 35 miles per gallon by the year 2015.

That might not sound like big news, but it is fairly significant because the new fuel economy regulations are giving automakers until the year 2020 to make this happen. That means Hyundai cars will likely be way ahead of its competition by about five years! “We’re taking fuel efficiency higher and faster than any other carmaker. We’re going to pass Toyota and Honda by 2015,” said the vice president of product development at Hyundai. Those are fairly lofty goals for the fifth largest automaker in the world, but its track record shows that Hyundai isn’t afraid to take risks, set high goals and accomplish them.

The new plans were announced at the world-famous Los Angeles Auto Show where many other manufacturers are showcasing their latest concept cars and features. One of the Hyundai cars showcased at this year’s show was the company’s first hybrid Sonata that will be available on dealer lots in 2010.

The new fuel-efficient campaign for Hyundai cars is called the “Hyundai Blue Drive.” Keep an eye out for these words in the next couple years and you’ll know where you can find the cars and technology of the future.
