New Cars Rise to the Top of Fuel Efficiency

Hyundai DealerNow more than ever, people are looking for cars that are tops when it comes to fuel efficiency. With gas prices rising almost daily, people are paying more and more attention to how many miles per gallon they can expect from their new car.

Traditionally, consumers have looked toward Honda and Toyota for the most fuel efficient cars on the market. This is true not only in the area of smaller economy cars, but in the area of mid-sized sedans, as well.

For years, the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry have held top honors among mid-size sedans, when it comes to gas mileage. New models from Hyundai and Chevrolet, however, threaten the Honda/Toyota lead.

The 2009 Hyundai Sonata and the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu both check in at an amazing 22 mpg in the city, and 32 mpg for highway driving. In contrast, the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry fall slightly behind at 21 mpg for city driving and 31 mpg for highway driving.

At the low end of the spectrum is the Ford Fusion. The Ford Fusion gets 20 mpg when driving in the city, and only 28 when driving on the highway.

These changing numbers when it comes to fuel efficiency are not going unnoticed. Sonatas are flying out of Hyundai Dealers, and General Motors is having some difficulty keeping up with the demand for the Malibu.

Hyundai is also gaining ground when it comes to overall fleet efficiency. While Honda has the most efficient vehicles with an average of 22.9 mpg, Hyundai is right behind it at 22.7 average mpg.
