The Pontiac G8 Sport Truck, which was schedule to hit the market in the United States this year, has been canceled. This vehicle was a car-pickup mix very reminiscent of the El Camino, and was designed to have been a specialty vehicle. The decision to drop the G8 was based, at least in part on the projection that annual sales of the vehicle probably would not have topped 5,000.
The vehicle was originally unveiled last spring during the auto show in New York. The vehicle would have represented a unique segment of the market. Like the El Camino, it would likely have been a polarizing vehicle. Some people truly loved the idea of the El Camino and others just didn’t get it. Regardless, it is expected that the G8 would have generated this same kind of sentiment from both sides of the aisle.
Other versions of the Pontiac G8, including the Pontiac G8 sedan, are going to continue. The G8 for 2009, in particular, is expected to do very well in its segment.
